The Cooeenet@qld project was an initiative of Queensland Health and supported by the Federal Government's Clever Networks program. Its prime object was to improve the access of regional communities in North Queensland to specialist health and emergency services through the use of broadband technologies. A secondary objective was to leverage those technologies into the surrounding communities. After a competitive process, the Cooeenet@qld project managers selected Cirrus as the preferred provider for the regional telecommunications networks. Over a period of six weeks, Cirrus built and deployed a network supporting speeds of 10Mbps over some 160 square kilometres in and around Ingham and Bowen. It now operates the network.
In deploying the networks, Cirrus worked closely with the Hinchinbrook Shire and Whitsunday Regional Councils - it deployed equipment on their sites and is now delivering high speed Internet services to residences and businesses in the local community. A substantial portion of the costs were covered by the Coeenet@qld project.
